VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Our province is well-represented in Sochi.
Almost 20 per cent of Canada’s Olympians have ties to BC. Of our 221 Olympians, 30 athletes were born here while another 11 now make BC their home.
Wendy Pattenton with the Canadian Sport Institute Pacific says we can thank mother nature for those numbers. “Apparently a lot of it has to do with climate and conditions for training, and obviously BC is a great place to live. Certainly we are seeing more and more athletes choosing to train in British Columbia.”
Pattenton says the last Olympic’s being held here in 2010 also helps. “Obviously with the legacy facilities up in Whistler, so our Whistler Athletes Centre is extremely busy in the summer and winter.”
It doesn’t stop with athletes. 12 per cent of Canadian Olympic coaches and technical staff are also from BC.
