BC seeks intervener status for Kinder Morgan hearings

By

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – The province has now filed an application to take part in the public hearings into Kinder Morgan’s proposed expansion of its Trans Mountain oil pipeline.

They are now part of a long list other communities hoping to take part in the process.

Surrey, Burnaby and Abbotsford are all hoping to have the ability to make presentations and receive any documents filed during the process.

Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman says this will allow them to express concerns about risks posed to the local economy and environment. “Impact to natural parks and trails we have, the maintenance of road accesses through their construction zones, what impact it may have to our infrastructure such as underground water, sewer and drainage access.”

Banman says Council isn’t sure which side of the debate it falls on just yet. “It’s one of those things that comes before us and the data. The intervener will actually give us the opportunity to ask those kinds of questions and then come up with an answer to that.”

Kinder Morgan is seeking to twin its pipeline from Edmonton to its terminal in Burnaby to increase capacity from 300,000 to 890,000 barrels per day.

The deadline to apply is Wednesday, Feb 12th.
