VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s been a year since the penny was phased out across the country.
The rust-coloured coin disappeared peacefully and rather quickly. Now, one of the country’s largest financial institutions, Desjardins, wants to get rid of the nickel.
We hit the streets to find out your thoughts on this idea.
One woman we spoke with is pretty attached to her change. “I miss the penny; I just like coins, so I’d be devastated [to lose the nickel].”
But we found another man who isn’t too worried.
“I think it’s still a way to go before that happens,” he tells us.
In addition to getting rid of the nickel, Desjardins would also like to see the $5 bill turned into a coin.
The federal government has looked at switching to a $5 coin in the past; in 2007, the Bank of Canada suggested we make the switch no later than 2021.
