Community safety forum in Surrey

SURREY (NEWS1130) – In an effort to calm the fears of people living in Newton, Surrey’s mayor, city council and RCMP will be holding a community safety forum this afternoon.
Councillor Barinder Rasode says things have been tense in the city since hockey mom Julie Paskall died after being beaten outside the Newton Arena in December.
Whatever solutions come up at the meeting, Rasode says will take time to implement. “We have heard from residents around doing more in terms of some long-term planning, and around other safety features like maintaining the security guards on an ongoing basis.”
More officers on foot patrols and better lighting were installed at the arena after Paskall died.
This meeting is part of an ongoing series between people and the city.
It’s being held at the Newton Recreation Centre gym.
