VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If you were hoping for some goodies in Tuesday’s Provincial budget, you might be disappointed. Omni TV political analyst Kim Emerson says this year, it’s all about balance.
Emerson says you shouldn’t expect any extra spending as the Liberal Government continues to belt-tighten in an effort to balance the budget. But he says there could be good news, especially when it comes to savings:
“It is likely that there will be excess money left over from the firefighting budget because our firefighting situation in BC through the past year was not as extreme as it was in other places, and likely not as much as what they would have budgeted for,” says Emerson, adding he expects the Liberal Government will announce revenue from taxes is up slightly.
“Another thing you will see is some rather large savings, perhaps as much as 50-million dollars, from this core review where various ministries are finding ways and means to cut back on expenditures or finding whether programs just simply don’t work anymore and eliminating those.”
Emerson says he expects them to point out how they’ve kept union contracts in line, but there’s still a number of unions left for Victoria to negotiate with, including the BCTF.
