Balanced BC budget a good first step: CTF

VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – It’s budget day in BC and a local watchdog is giving a tentative nod of approval to the provincial government.
It’s a good step but there’s still a long way to go, says Jordan Bateman with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.
He tells us it’s nice that the government appears to have balanced the budget, but that’s not the end goal.
“I’d like to see them come up with a plan to start to reduce the debt. When Christy Clark became premier, the debt was about $45 billion. By 2016, it’s going to be $70 billion. This is a lot of money,” he says.
“Even though we’ve balanced the books, now we’ve got to… put some laws in place that make sure that any surplus we have, a big chunk of it goes to debt reduction,” adds Bateman.
