Coquihalla Highway closed again after massive avalanche

By

HOPE (NEWS1130) – The route linking the south coast and southern Interior was closed earlier this week for about one day when a small avalanche struck near the highway’s summit.

Doug Fraser of Chilliwack Search and Rescue says a Class 4 avalanche, which is a massive snow slide, has come down on the highway, although he didn’t know the exact location.

He says his search-and-rescue group and another were put on standby, but as far as he knows no vehicles have been impacted.

The ministry says the current storm cycle on the highway’s corridor has created avalanche conditions not seen since the Coquihalla opened 27 years ago.

Just when the highway will reopen remains unknown, but the ministry says detours are available via Highway 1 at Kamloops and Hope, or at Highway 8 in Merritt.
