VSB looking at whether fundraising fasting should be banned

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver School District plans to look into how dangerous an annual fundraiser can be for students.
After a warning from Vancouver Coastal Health, the district may decide schools should find alternatives to fasting for the 30 Hour Famine.
It’ll come down to what comes out of the superintendent’s look into the famine and potential risks for students. Kurt Heinrich with the district says they’ll be looking at the issue with Vancouver Coastal Health; they want to make sure there aren’t any safety concerns for students who participate in the famine.
“After some consideration at the sort of the senior management level, a decision would be made, should it be made to ban the fasting,” he explains.
“Communication would go out to all schools and then the schools would work with their student communities to find alternatives,” he adds.
The 30 Hour Famine raises money for hungry kids through World Vision.
Vancouver Coastal Health says fasting could affect teens’ body image and lead to bulimic behaviour.
