Nelson search crews looking for people hurt in avalanche

By

NELSON (NEWS1130) – Members of Nelson Search and Rescue have spent the night trekking through high risk avalanche terrain in hopes of reaching two people injured by a slide.

As many as 16 members of the team set out yesterday afternoon to reach the victims, who are believed to be in the high mountain backcountry near Stagleap Provincial Park, about 30 kilometres west of Creston.

The team had hoped to reach the victims by helicopter, but bad weather grounded that plan, forcing rescuers to ski to the scene.

The injured pair is believed to be part of a larger group of skiers that were in the Twin Lakes area, despite the Canadian Avalanche Centre’s special public warning issued late last week about extreme avalanche conditions.
