VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Are you concerned about your eyesight for driving, or are you concerned about a family member’s?
A poll from the Canadian Automobile Association has found half of British Columbians know someone who has stopped driving at night, and the reason is failing eyesight.
The association says half of seniors in Canada have taken at least one step to adjust their driving habits, such as reducing or eliminating driving at night.
But it says we still need more information about age-related changes that affect people when they’re on the road.
One example: only three per cent of seniors are aware that the average 60-year-old person needs three times as much light to see as they did when they were 20.
ICBC says there are about half a million drivers over the age of 65 in this province; there are just over three million drivers in total.
Other issues for elderly drivers are reduced strength, slower reaction time, and loss of hearing.
