One person dead, three missing in Kootenay canoe accident

NELSON (NEWS1130) – The search for three missing people in Slocan Lake continues today after a 19-year-old woman was found unconcious in a partially submerged canoe last night.
Sergeant Darryl Little with New Denver RCMP say the woman died overnight. Three young men are still missing.

It’s believed none of them were wearing life jackets.

“Well, at this point we’re still optimistic. We’re hoping they got to shore and haven’t been able to contact anybody. We’re treating this as a rescue mission at this time, it’s not a recovery yet,” he explains.

“It’s a reminder to people that are going to be going on the water this year, any sort of watercraft people need to wear life jackets. In this case it doesn’t appear that life jackets were being worn and a tragic event like this is devestating to the community,” Little adds.

Three of the four on board are from New Denver and the other is from Gibsons.
