BC lawsuit launched by activists fighting against a mine in Guatemala

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Activists fighting a Canadian-owned mine in Guatemala have filed a lawsuit in Vancouver.

They’re suing Tahoe Resources, which is incorporated in BC, in connection with violence during a 2013 demonstration at the company’s Escobal silver mine in the Central American country.

The seven Guatemalans accuse security guards of shooting at them and wounding one of them three times.

Luis Monroy says he had multiple surgeries and cannot work as he has trouble breathing.

Tahoe’s security chief in Guatemala was criminally charged in that country and fired by Tahoe Resources.

The Vancouver lawsuit accuses Alberto Rotondo of trying to use force against peaceful protesters, lying about the protesters attacking mine employees, arranging the tampering of evidence, and tried to leave the country to avoid legal issues.

A similar case against another Canadian miner in Guatemala, Hudbay Minerals, is proceeding in Ontario.
