DELTA (NEWS1130) – The approval of a new coal facility at Fraser Surrey Docks has gotten mixed reaction this week. Delta’s mayor says she’s not surprised about Port Metro Vancouver’s approval of coal expansion. Although the project has come under fire by some environmental critics, Jackson isn’t saying whether she’s in favour of the project or not. However, she does say that there will be more scientific testing to follow in the next year.
“We’re going to be getting a lot of scientifically based data and I think that will be what everyone will be waiting for, as opposed to sometimes heresy,” she says.
She explains the FSD has the authority under federal law to continue what it’s doing but a Delta committee will work to do environmental and health tests throughout the next year.
She says once results are back, if they are negative, then a decision will be made as to how to move forward. “I think it will then show us exactly where and when the problems take place if there are any and that’s what I’d like is to be able to think, that is going to be the test,” she argues.
The expansion project got approval earlier this week by Port Metro Vancouver which said there are no unacceptable risks.
