Colleen Murphy, Hannah Moscovitch among finalists for Siminovitch Prize

By

TORONTO – Celebrated playwrights Colleen Murphy and Hannah Moscovitch are among the four finalists for this year’s Siminovitch Prize in Theatre.

Murphy, who was born in Quebec and raised in northern Ontario, was shortlisted for the $100,000 prize in 2008. She won a Governor General’s Literary Award for her play “The December Man” (“L’homme de decembre”) and earned multiple Genie nominations as a screenwriter.

Ottawa-raised, Toronto-based Moscovitch is a multiple Dora Award winner who recently won an Ontario Trillium Book Award for “This is War.”

The other playwrights up for this year’s Siminovitch are also from Quebec: Michel Marc Bouchard, whose play “Tom at the Farm” (“Tom a la ferme”) was adapted into Xavier Dolan’s 2013 film, and Olivier Choiniere, whose best-known works include “Autodafe” and “Felicite.”

The winner, who must give $25,000 of the prize money to a protege of his or her choice, will be announced Oct. 20 in Toronto.

The prize was created in 2001 in honour of scientist Lou Siminovitch and his late wife Elinore.

It recognizes a body of work in design, direction and playwriting in three-year cycles.

This year’s jury includes chair John Van Burek, Rachel Ditor, Brian Dooley, Brendan Healy and Jean-Denis Leduc.
