BURNABY (NEWS1130) – A neighbourhood pub in Burnaby has been totally gutted following a massive three-alarm fire Saturday morning.
The cause is still under investigation, but RCMP say it is very suspicious.
Flames broke out around 3 a.m. at the Marine Pub on Marine Drive near Gilley, which has been in operation for the last two decades.
Burnaby Fire Assistant Chief Rick Weir says when they got there, flames were shooting up to 80 feet into the air. “It was fully involved from front to rear so they went defensive, which means we are not sending anybody in, we are fighting it from outside.”
“The pub itself is a total loss, there is not much left of it at all,” he adds. “The front wall is the only wall that is standing.”
He says a nearby beer and wine store was saved. “We had exposure lines places preventing the fire from spreading through that and no other buildings were affected.”
Up to 30 firefighters were on scene and no one was hurt in the blaze.
Investigators will be there all day gathering evidence.
