Grass fires fuelled by high winds, dry conditions in Alberta, Saskatchewan

Bone-dry conditions and high winds have fuelled several grass fires in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Mounties had to re-route traffic on major highways in both provinces on Wednesday after heavy smoke reduced visibility.

Flames jumped Highway 14 about five kilometres east of Biggar, Sask., and police blocked the road.

Grass fires east of Edmonton closed Highway 16 in both directions, east of Ardrossan, between Range Roads 213 and 214.

Residents in the area were advised to stay indoors and be on stand-by for possible evacuation.

A fire north of Edmonton near Fort Saskatchewan has closed township roads, but the county says there are no threats to residents in this area.
