DELTA (NEWS1130) – An amphibious amateur-built ultralight plane has crashed on Highway 91 in Delta. It happened between 72nd Ave. and 64th Ave just after 6 p.m.
Callers to News1130 say the plane appeared to go nose first into the median.
Maria was just steps away from where it landed. “A plane has come down on highway 91 going south and it came down and it hit the highway. It went nose first into the barrier dividing northbound traffic and southbound traffic and it kind of hit at an angle and I said, ‘oh no he’s going to hit!’ and he did.”
“That’s just something you never see. It’s using the highway as a landing strip almost, it was trying to land like an emergency landing,” says a surprised Jennifer.
Delta Police say there are no injuries.
Bill Yearwood with the Transportation Safety Board says the pilot had to make an emergency landing on the highway because the plane lost power. “We know the pilot recorded engine problems and that’s a good reason to do an emergency landing on a highway.”
He says investigators will be speaking with the pilot tomorrow.
