Large indoor water park chain considers location in Squamish

SQUAMISH (NEWS 1130) – The world’s largest chain of indoor water parks is setting its sights on Squamish.

The Canadian operator of the Great Wolf Lodge has bought a parcel of land while it considers building a resort there.

The only other Canadian location for the Great Wolf Lodge is in Niagara Falls, and it’s operated by the Jim Pattison Group, the company that purchased the lot in Squamish. The other sites are in the States.

The water slides and other family-oriented attractions are meant for people staying at the resort.

Squamish mayor Patricia Heintzman says her city has made the company’s shortlist because of the region’s tourism potential.

“It is still close to YVR. It’s a beautiful drive up Howe Sound. It features a dynamic place in British Columbia.”

She says the high-profile resort would be a plus for the city.

“Certainly a resort of this magnitude, that could represent 400 full-time equivalent jobs, is a big potential employer and a big tourism draw in the community.”

The Jim Pattison Group would need to buy more land and to rezone to make the resort eventually happen.
