DELTA (NEWS 1130) – Delta-South MLA Vicki Huntington says she was surprised when she heard the Tsawwassen First Nation was considering plans for an LNG export facility.
She expects a few facets of the plan, including a necessary pipeline through delicate agricultural land, could cause controversy.
“The land is critical to the migratory birds, they forage on those uplands, on winter crops. We’re destroying those lands in a very rapid manner,” Huntington said.
Another area for concern is that product from the facility would be shipped to tankers at nearby Roberts Bank.
“My concern is that suddenly we’re looking at liquid bulk exports out of the Fraser estuary at Delta ports, which is something the previous environmental review panels have said no to.”
Approximately 290 Tsawwassen First Nation members will vote on the proposal on December 16th.
Leaders have promised to uphold strict environmental practices and Huntington said she has confident they will take the necessary steps.
