VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Do you have a feeling your energy bill is a bit higher than it should be?
If you live in Vancouver you could soon get some insight into why that might be happening.
From older appliances to insufficient insulation, you may be spending as much as four hundred bucks a year more than you would if you had a more energy efficient home.
“We know that there are a range of older homes in Vancouver that have little or no insulation,” says Green Building Planner Chris Higgins with the City of Vancouver. “Thermal imaging is a tool that other municipalities have used successfully to help citizens identify where there are gaps in insulation, missing insulation.”
Higgins says the plan is to use thermal imaging to evaluate thousands of homes, to let owners know where the problems lie.
“It might cost [the city] in the range somewhere between $10-$20 per house to image,” says Higgins. “It’s a much lower cost because the city’s doing it at such a scale. As opposed to homeowners individually imaging their home — I had my home imaged a number of years ago and it was around $800.”
The city plans to test 12,000 to 15,000 homes this winter.
