VANCOVUER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Tennis Club is celebrating its 40th birthday this weekend.
This isn’t some fancy, snobby private club but a fun and affordable club affiliated with the Douglas Park Community Centre,
“We’ve even got one person in their 80s still going strong!”
Vaughn Fraser with the club says they have seven courts on Tuesdays and Fridays from May to September.
“We work on a very small budget, but its because of all the volunteer contributions that members make that makes this possible.”
He says there’s been a big increase in recreational tennis players because of Milos Raonic.
“Everybody was really cheering for him but he’s doing better and better every year. We’re still hopefull we’ll see a major from Milos.”
Other public tennis clubs in the city include Stanley Park, Kits and False Creek.
Tennis is hot because of Milos Raonic – one Vancouver club says they’ve seen a boost in recerational players.
40 years and still swingin’–the Queen Elizabeth Tennis Club remains public and proud of it.
