VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Following a suspicious fire that caused extensive damage to Sir Guy Carleton Elementary School on Friday night, students in East Vancouver are doing their best to gather support for their facility and two others.
A petition is now circulating to try to save the school as well as Graham Bruce Elementary and Gladstone Secondary, which are all in the same neighbourhood.
NDP MLA Adrian Dix is part of that effort. “These are just schools with, between them, 1,600 students in them. They are some of the best schools in Canada. They are highly respected. The teachers do a great job and the communities love them. And sending that message is important.”
Dix says they’ve managed to get more than 4,000 signatures on a paper petition, and a couple more thousand on an online petition.
Meanwhile, students at fire-damaged Carleton are still waiting to find out what alternative arrangements are being made for the first day of classes which are about two weeks away.
