RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – One boy is in custody and students have finally been allowed to leave after threats against Robert Alexander McMath Secondary in Richmond sent the school into a hold and secure this morning.

Corporal Dennis Hwang says an investigation began yesterday after a series of suspiciously named wifi networks appeared, and then several threats were made.

“We have one male in custody. He’s a youth and he’s not known to police,”

Corporal Hwang wouldn’t say if the youth was a student at the school, or what charges, if any, are pending.

“We apologize for the inconvenience but we appreciate everybody’s patience.”

Earlier, Corporal Hwang said the investigation had looked into to several threats.

“We have conducted a comprehensive safety assessment along with the Richmond School District. Based on this assessment, a decision was made to hold and secure the school,” says Hwang.

A message posted for parents on the school’s website said “McMath students are currently remaining in their first period classrooms in response to a concerning message that was posted recently. All students and staff are safe and the RCMP are on site following district protocol. We ask for parents to remain away from the school at this time. We also ask for limited calls to the school at this time.”
