Fire kills thousands of chickens in Abbotsford, cause under investigation

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) – The cause of a barn fire that killed thousands of chickens in Abbotsford this afternoon is still being investigated.

The fire on Ross Road, near Downes Road, started before 1 p.m. and the barn was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived.

Assistant Chief Craig Leighton says there were reportedly 20,000 birds inside.

“The barn was stocked with chickens and they’ve all perished in the fire,” he says.

He says crews are now using excavators to tear down the barn.

“It was fully engulfed when we arrived. It could be seen from several miles away while we were responding.”
