Prince George Humane Society bursting with wildfire-evacuated pets

PRINCE GEORGE (NEWS 1130) – Prince George Human Society is packed with pets affected by the Williams Lake wildfire and the group is moving to a local elementary school for more space.

The facility has become the temporary home of more than 80 pets, dropped off by evacuated families who can’t keep them at the evacuation centre at College of New Caledonia.

“Cats, dogs, rabbits, ferrets. We had pregnant female cats and dogs that came in and they had babies while they’ve been here,” Director Andrea Fowers said. “It’s a traumatic situation for everybody.”

When space became too tight at their facility, Fowers says they moved to the Kinsman Hall, but on Wednesday afternoon all the animals were moved to Peden Hill Elementary School for more room.

Fowers says it’s been a chaotic last few days, but the team of volunteers have worked diligently to care for the animals and the community has rallied behind them.

“I’ve got multiple trucks full of donations that have come in. The Total Pet (owner) basically came down here and handed me the keys to her shop and said whatever you need,”

People who wish to volunteer or donate can call 250-640-7415 to find out what the society needs.
