PORT COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) – Two cougars had to be killed in a Port Coquitlam neighbourhood yesterday after one of them attacked a small dog at Chelsea Park.
One of the cougars was also stalking a conservation officer, which prompted the decision to kill the cats. It comes a day after a cougar sighting on the North Shore yesterday prompted a warning to keep school kids inside during recess and the lunch hour.
Ian McDonald has his prepared with air horns and bear spray due to the fact that he lives in an area prone to wildlife encounters.
He says he’s not worried for his own safety, but this latest incident is concerning because of how close the cougars were to the nearby playground.
“The cougars, obviously one was aggressive toward a dog, I believe it was a smaller dog, yesterday, minor wounds fortunately. But if it had been a larger cat, and if they were a little hungrier, that could’ve been the end of the dog.”
“It’s a little scary. They are unpredictable and [we didn’t know] whether they were going to find them,” says Leslie Farac, who lives across the street.
A few days ago a cougar was also spotted in the Port Moody area.
