One person missing, believed trapped in a vehicle after B.C. mudslide: RCMP

CACHE CREEK, B.C. – RCMP in British Columbia say one person is missing following a mudslide near the village of Cache Creek in the province’s Interior.

Sgt. Janelle Shoihet says the person is believed to have been trapped in a vehicle caught in the mudslide on Saturday. When police were called to the scene they found 57-year-old driver of the yellow 1968 Morgan convertible. He told officers he was able to make it out of the vehicle, but his wife was missing.

Ashcroft RCMP say initial search efforts have been unsuccessful, and they’re putting out a call for help. They’re looking for 67-year-old Valerie Morris. She’s described as Caucasian, 5’2″, 113 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes.

Morris was last seen wearing white/cream capri pants, a pink shirt and a bright red jacket, and a black sun visor hat.

The pair was travelling from Vancouver to Kamloops with a larger group of six vehicles.

The slide happened near the intersection of Highway 99 and Highway 97, about 100 kilometres west of Kamloops.

The highway remains closed today in both directions near the intersection because of the slide.

Heavy rains fell in the region on the weekend and caused a series of slides along the stretch of road.

Emergency Management B.C. says six people were evacuated safely from a home near Ashcroft because of a landslide in the area.
