BC Ferries resumes service on major routes after cancellations due to high winds

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – BC Ferries has resumed sailings on the three major routes after they were shut down nearly all day Thursday.

Sailings between Vancouver and Victoria, and Vancouver and Nanaimo will back in service this evening. Sailings between Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay at resume at 6 p.m., Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay at 7 p.m., and Tsawwassen to Duke Point at 8:15 p.m.

Bad weather forced the cancellation of multiple ferry routes Thursday morning through to the evening.

As a wind warning remains in effect for the region, B.C. Ferries is asking customers to check sailing times before heading out.

All ferry routes to and from Vancouver Island were cancelled because of high winds. Only sailings to the Gulf Islands were unaffected.

Cancelled routes:

  • Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay: 7am, 9am, 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm
  • Swartz Bay-Tsawwassen: 7am, 8am, 9am, 11am,12pm, 1pm, 2pm
  • Tsawwassen-Duke Point: 5:15am, 7:45am, 10:15am, 12:45pm
  • Duke Point-Tsawwassen: 5:15am, 7:45am, 10:15am, 12:45pm
  • Tsawwassen-Gulf Islands: 6:20am departing Long Harbour, 7:10am departing Otter Bay, 7:45am departing Village Bay, 8:20 am departing Sturdies Bay, 9:55am departing Tsawwassen,11am departing Sturdies Bay,11:35am departing Village Bay,12:10pm departing Otter Bay
  • Horseshoe Bay-Departure Bay: 6:15am, 8:25am, 9:40am, 1pm
  • Departure Bay-Horseshoe Bay: 6:15am, 8:25am, 9:40am, 1pm
  • Powell River-Comox: 6:15am departing Comox, 8:05am departing Powell River
  • Powell River-Texada: 10:40am departing Powell River

“For customers wanting to travel today I would suggest you look at our website or follow us on Twitter before you head out to the terminals,” warned Deborah Marshall with BC Ferries. “We may have further sailings cancelled today it just depends on how that forecast comes through.”

Environment Canada has issued a wind and rainfall warning for parts of the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley. A winter storm and snowfall warning are also in effect for the Coquihalla Highway and the Sea to Sky.
