LA LOCHE, Sask. – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says $2.2-million will be spent over five years to help people at a northern Saskatchewan school recover from a deadly shooting.
He was in La Loche, northwest of Saskatoon on Tuesday.
The visit comes one day after the third anniversary of shootings at a high school there and a home that left four people dead and seven injured.
Trudeau says it took time to figure out what the community needed.
“That idea that Ottowa knows best is, fortunately, something very much of the past, particularly when it comes to reconciliation, to Indigenous communities, First Nations and Métis communities,” Trudeau added. “That’s something we’ve moved forward on in the right way.”
The community’s mayor, Robert St. Pierre, says the money will help meet the community’s needs.
“This is a fundamental step, this is a good leap forward for us. It’s going to enable us to put some pieces together and formalize a better plan for a community on a healing journey and it’s integral in our plan.”
The Saskatchewan government also says it will provide funding to build new housing for teachers and health-care staff.
