Some discounted BC Ferries fares coming this year

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It could soon be cheaper to sail between Vancouver and Victoria.

BC Ferries says it’s revamping its reservation system to offer permanent discounts at off-peak times and removing some fees on those bookings starting this fall.

The goal is to shift some of the traffic away from busier sailing times, all while helping travelers save a little cash.

“Traffic has been increasing, and by offering discounts at off-peak sailing times, if customers have discretion when they can travel, they can get a discount and we can free up some space on the busier sailings,” Deborah Marshall with BC Ferries tells NEWS 1130.

Details of the changes are expected to be announced this fall and will be rolled out on the Vancouver to Victoria routes first.

“We are going to roll it out slowly. We will start with our major routes and then what we will do is collect customer feedback,” Marshall adds.

There are still a few more details that need to be worked out.

Marshall says the new fare model has been in the works for a couple of years, and adds it will be launched with a new website.

There’s still no word on how much of a discount travellers will get during off-peak hours, or when exactly the announcement will be made.

“In the meantime, we are going to be launching a pricing promotion for the summer time, and that will also be on the three major routes between the mainland and Vancouver Island, as well as over to Langdale on the Sunshine Coast,” Marshall says.
