Memorial planned for pastor killed in fiery crash at Peace Arch border crossing

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A month after their pastor died in a fiery crash at the Peace Arch border crossing, people will gather on Saturday to remember Tom Cheung.

Cheung was killed after his van was hit by a speeding car and burst into flames on May 2nd.

According to Philip Tse — a family spokesperson — Cheung’s family continues to struggle with the loss.

Tse says the man’s daughter is barely speaking.

“Because on that day, Tom was supposed to pick her up at school, but, of course, he did not show up,” Tse told NEWS 1130. “It’s really hard for the family to deal with right now — it’s kind of like a void in the family.”

Tse says the family’s life was turned upside down when Cheung died. According to Tse, he speaks with Cheung’s widow — who is putting on a brave face — almost daily.

“She’s trying to be strong, but at some moments, I just let her cry,” he said. “He tried real hard to be at home, spending time with the family, with his children, so right now, all of a sudden he’s gone.”

An online fundraiser was set up for the family with the hopes of raising $100,000. As of Friday morning, the money raised surpassed the initial goal.

The driver of the car that slammed into Cheung’s minivan hasn’t been charged, but the Surrey RCMP says the investigation is still active.
