Protests expected Sunday as event by controversial anti-SOGI speaker at UBC goes ahead

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Protests are expected tonight as a controversial critic of the province’s sexual orientation and gender identity resource SOGI 123 is still set to speak at UBC.

This comes not long after some 5,000 UBC staff members called on the president to cancel Jenn Smith’s speech.

Calling this a “platform for bigoted, anti-transgender hate speech,” the Assocation of Administrative and Professional Staff were hoping the university would join Trinity Western and others in nixing the event.

UBC defends the decision, saying it’s a free speech issue.

Protests are expected tonight around 6:30 at Martha Piper Plaza, not long before Smith’s speech.
