Richmond gets its first rainbow crosswalk in time for Pride week

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) — A rainbow crosswalk in Richmond is an overdue but welcome addition to the city’s landscape, says a city councillor.

Coun. Kelly Greene was an advocate for the crosswalk when the proposal was brought to council and says she is relieved to see the brightly coloured symbol of pride on a street near city hall.

“It feels amazing. Not only is it aesthetically beautiful, we can also make sure some of our most marginalized people feel like this is their home too,” she says.

Greene says since the painting began on Saturday people in other cities have reached out to tell her they’re pleased Richmond has joined the ranks of others in the region.

“It’s overdue and I’m really happy that we’re finally there,” she says.

The crosswalk was opposed by one city councillor and some Richmond residents.

The paint was dry in time for the launch of the city’s pride week events which begin on July 27.

Greene hopes it will draw attention to the events that the city has planned and will draw people to the intersection on Minoru Boulevard near the Richmond Public Library.

“Come on by and have a happy stroll across the rainbow crosswalk and celebrate all of our community members,” she says
