RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) — Keep the tunnel, build a bridge, or combine both?
A Metro Vancouver mayors task force is reviewing six options to replace or rebuild the aging George Massey Tunnel.
The Ministry of Transportation needs to narrow down the list before moving on to gathering public input. Those options include:
- New eight-lane immersed-tube tunnel with multi-use pathway
- New eight-lane bridge with multi-use pathway
- New eight-lane deep-bored tunnel, plus existing tunnel for multi-use pathway
- New six-lane immersed tube-tunnel, plus existing tunnel with two transit lanes
- New six-lane bridge, plus existing tunnel for two transit lanes
- New six-lane deep-bored tunnel, plus existing tunnel for two transit lanes
If the tunnel is rehabilitated and maintained, it can be used for up to 50 years according to the province, but it doesn’t meet seismic standards.
It’s been two years since construction of a previously-approved ten-lane bridge was stopped to give local mayors more say in what ultimately happens.
