SURREY (NEWS 1130) — An international student from India has been identified as the victim of an apparent murder-suicide in Surrey.
According to local media in India, Prabhleen Matharu was found dead in a Surrey home on Friday, and her death has been confirmed by her devastated family in India.
Speaking from the Punjab, her father, Gurdial, told media in Punjabi that the RCMP has not provided information regarding the motive or the cause of her death.
“My daughter, Prabhleen Kaur, left to Canada 3 years ago to study. At 6 a.m., I got a call from the police. That they had bad news. The officer told me my daughter had been murdered. They haven’t told me anything else,” he said.
Her family now plans to travel to B.C. to find out what happened to their daughter and to bring her body back to India for the funeral.
Matharu had come to Canada on a student visa in 2016 and studied at Langara College in Vancouver.
IHIT and the RCMP have not revealed much information on this case. Police said last week they had been called to a home where two bodies were found – and only one was the victim of a homicide.
On Monday, IHIT confirmed the homicide victim was a 21-year-old woman from Indian and the second deceased person was an 18-year-old resident of the Lower Mainland.
In a tweet they said they are not looking for further suspects, and will not be releasing the victim’s name, citing privacy laws and saying “there is no investigative need to do so.”
