Maple Ridge shuts down unlicensed petting zoo

MAPLE RIDGE (NEWS 1130) – A Maple Ridge-area petting zoo has been told to shut down.

According to the City of Maple Ridge, Meadows Family Farm petting zoo doesn’t have a business license, nor does it have approvals from the Agricultural Land Commission or Fraser Health.

The city gave the zoo notice to close shop over the summer, but the parties made an agreement to stay open, provided the zoo get its approvals in order by Oct. 1.

When city staff inspected the property Oct. 8, they found it hadn’t made the changes it promised to, and had expanded its business and built new structures on the property without the necessary municipal permits or inspections.

“The City has taken this action to ensure the health and safety of our citizens and maintain the integrity of the business licensing process that applies fairly to all Maple Ridge businesses,” reads a news release from the city.

The zoo must stay closed until it has fixed its issues with permits and licensing.
