VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A stabbing started as a fight between two different gangs in Vancouver’s Yaletown and involved up to 20 men, according to the Vancouver Police Department.

The fight began inside an establishment in Yaletown, before spilling onto the streets near Hamilton and Helmcken early Sunday morning.

Four people were sent to hospital suffering from stab wounds, and one man remains there in serious condition.

The VPD is praising its officers for their quick work during the incident.

“Without the quick action and officers being trained in TEMS this assault may have ended up being a homicide,” Sergeant Aaron Roed said in a statement. “There is no question that trained TEMS officers played a role in saving multiple lives.”

The VPD says seven people were arrested, but have since been released without charges.

However, the investigation is still ongoing and the VPD says they anticipate charges being laid.

Detectives from the VPD Major Crime Section are asking witnesses or anyone with cellphone video to contact them at 604-717-2541 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
