Mixed reviews for Netflix docu-series on Canadian killer

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A new Netflix true crime series about one of Canada’s notorious killers is sparking some mixed emotions for viewers.

Don’t F*** With Cats: Hunting An Internet Killer tells the story of Luka Magnotta, the former adult entertainer who first attracted attention for uploading videos of himself brutally torturing and killing kittens.

The 37-year-old was later convicted of first-degree murder in the killing and dismemberment of an international student from China in Montreal.

Early reviews call the three-episode limited series “triggering,” “sick,” and “absolutely brilliant.”

On Twitter, some have blasted the genre, with one person saying “True Crime is an exploitative genre that harms victims and their families. Imagine being Lin Jun’s family and seeing a documentary about the brutal, horrific racist torture and murder of your relative (just 7 years ago) be released with the cheeky title ‘Don’t F*k with Cats.'”

The show follows the story of internet users across the world who jumped into action after a video of an unknown man killing two kittens was posted online. The online manhunt intensified as more disturbing videos were posted, including the infamous clip showing the dismemberment of 33-year-old Concordia University student Jun Lin.

The series shows snippets of some of these graphic videos, which have outraged many people.

Others have gone online to share their own “graphic content warnings.”

“Do not watch it if [you’re] sensitive to animal abuse & serial killer, it displayed short footages (sic) of the real events, but they cut the murder parts,” one tweet reads.

“Hey important PSA: if you get an advertisement for a Netflix series called, ‘Don’t F**k with Cats,’ I am here to give you the extreme content warning the trailer doesn’t give you,” another Twitter user posted.

The series has gotten some good reviews, however, with one person saying the show is “a must watch,” and another writing that it’s “Such an interesting & well put together documentary. It grabs tour (sic) attention straight from the beginning til (sic) the end.”

Magnotta was convicted of first-degree murder, as well as other counts, in December 2014. He is currently serving a life sentence for his crimes.

At his trial, he admitted to killing and dismembering Lin but had sought to be found not criminally responsible by way of mental disorder.
