SURREY (NEWS 1130) — A large police presence in Surrey’s Mud Bay Park was the result of a group of young men filming a video for social media Monday night.
Around 7 p.m. Surrey RCMP says it responded urgently to a call of a man with a firearm at the park on Colebrook Road. According to a release, witnesses had told Mounties they saw a man with a gun put another man in a headlock and drag him into the bushes.
Upon arrival, Mounties found and arrested 12 men between the ages of 25 and 30 who told officers they were filming a TikTok video with two pistol-style airsoft guns in the bushes. After searching the area, police say they found the airsoft guns, along with a hat, camera, and a chair with a rope.
The group of men has been released from custody and given a bylaw ticket since carrying an airgun in a park without permission is prohibited.
“Police have a duty to respond to all weapons calls as legitimate public safety concerns,” says Cpl. Elenore Sturko. “This group of young men put themselves and others at risk as a result of their poor decision making. Airsoft pistols and other replica firearms are best left at home, or better yet, for the safety and wellbeing of our community, please don’t buy one.”
