SURREY (NEWS 1130) — Fire crews had to use the jaws of life to remove a driver from an RV that plowed through a cement barrier, landed on top of cars parked in a driveway, and crashed into a home in Surrey.
At around 3:00 p.m. Saturday, firefighters were called to the intersection of 116 Avenue and 140A Street for reports of a person trapped inside the motorhome screaming.
“The vehicle, according to our crews had taken out some cement barriers, hit a large van in the driveway, and came to rest on the van with approximately half of the motorhome lodged into the house,” says Surrey Fire Service Surrey Fire Battalion Chief Reo Jerome.
“There were trees involved, and the windshield and the dashboard and steering wheel were kind of pinning her so that she couldn’t get out. Our crews had to cut into the vehicle and then use the jaws of life to make sure that we could get the patient out. No serious injuries were observed, and she was conscious the whole time. So, they brought her out on a spine board, out to the rear window of the motorhome down a ladder, and handed her off to the ambulance crew.”
Jerome says it’s remarkably fortunate that no one was in the home, and that the driver of the RV wasn’t seriously hurt.
He says it appears the brakes of the motorhome failed, but the exact cause of that failure still needs to be determined.
The RV will remain lodged in the house overnight, and removing it will be tricky.
“There’s some significant damage to the home and it’s very unstable, they’ll have to be quite careful tomorrow when they remove this motorhome,” Jerome says.
“There is a potential collapse.”
