B.C. Green Party set to announce new leader

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) — The B.C. Green Party is set to announce its new leader Monday.
Three candidates are vying for the position after nine days of online and phone voting.
Cowichan Valley MLA Sonia Furstenau is up against environmental lawyer Cam Brewer and entrepreneur Kim Darwin to become leader of the party.
The results of the leadership vote will be made known on the party’s Facebook and YouTube accounts at noon.

The new leader would replace Andrew Weaver, who stepped aside in January to sit as an Independent in the legislature, citing health issues in his family as a reason.
The Green Party won three seats in the 2017 election and signed a power-sharing agreement giving the NDP a chance to form a minority government.

That deal meant the Greens have been a factor in legislation and policy to ban large political donations while having a say on environmental and economic initiatives.
Adam Olsen has been serving as interim leader of the Green party.
Speculation persists that Premier John Horgan could call a fall election despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In July, he said the government is mandated to hold an election in October next year, so there’s “an opportunity” to call for a vote this fall, next spring or next summer.
