Sixth COVID-19 death reported by Cowichan Tribes; shelter in place order extended

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Cowichan Tribes on Vancouver Island confirmed its sixth COVID-19 related death this week.
The First Nation band says a total of 255 people have been infected with the virus since Dec. 31, and the vast majority (89 per cent) have recovered.
A shelter in place order has also been extended until 5 p.m. on March 19.
“While the continuation of our order can feel frustrating, we see the end in sight. With the first dose clinics completed, we anticipate this to be our last Shelter in Place order extension, but only if we all continue to do our part and case numbers are low,” reads a statement from the Cowichan Tribes chief and council issued Wednesday.
Cowichan Tribes, the largest single band in B.C. with about 4,900 members, initially issued the stay-at-home order until Jan. 22 after reporting 73 COVID-19 cases since Jan. 1.
On Thursday the sixth death was confirmed and the same number of patients are hospitalized. Ninety-six households in the community have been affected.
