Doctor taking to TikTok to fight vaccination misinformation

WINNIPEG (CityNews) – A Winnipeg doctor is taking to TikTok to fight vaccine hesitancy.

“You need to go where the people are. You need to go where people are getting their news and information. Because if those science and health voices aren’t there, there’s this lack of credible health information. That space gets filled with misinformation and myths,” explained Dr. Gigi Osler, a Winnipeg Doctor and Surgeon.

Myths like the COVID-19 vaccine somehow magnetizing people. Dr. Osler enlists the help of one of Canada’s leading vaccine experts to debunk it.

She also shows people the actual reason why magnets might stick to your arm after vaccination.

Epidemiologist Cynthia Carr says educating hesitant people is the most important thing right now as Canada gets close to the homestretch in its race toward herd immunity.

“Because, what we’ve seen in other countries that did have vaccines and were very efficient in their rollout is that they’ve kind of hit a barrier of people that were willing to get vaccinated. So that happened pretty quickly and now there’s a large proportion of certain countries that simply won’t get vaccinated. And over time, that could have a serious impact again on the ability long term to control the circulation of this virus,” explained Carr.

“People are becoming less hesitant and we’re seeing in different provinces and states and countries, where more people are vaccinated, their cases are coming down and their lives are getting back to normal. So this messaging right now is important,” added Osler.
