Missing hiker found dead in North Vancouver

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — The search for a missing hiker who was separated from his friend while navigating tricky terrain Friday afternoon has come to a tragic end.

The pair veered off of a trail near Kennedy Falls and were trying to reach the summit of Mount Fromme.

“One of the pair returned to their vehicle, however when his companion did not return, he contacted North Vancouver RCMP and reported his friend missing,” a statement from the RCMP reads.

A dozen crew members and a helicopter with night vision were out searching Friday night but after a fruitless night of searching, the North Shore Recuse was back out Saturday morning.

And around 10:30 crews found the 50-year-old male hiker a short distance from the location where the pair became separated.

“By all accounts, this appears to be a tragic accident,” the RCMP statement adds.

Sgt. Peter Devries of North Vancouver RCMP says the outcome is one they never hope for.

“This is a tragic story and it’s one of the things we hope never happens, but unfortunately it sometimes does on the North Shore mountains,” he says.

Devries confirmed the BC Coroners Service now has conduct of this investigation.

“We certainly offer our condolences to his family and friends,” he says.

Meanwhile, North Shore Search and Rescue have no time to rest, they’ve been called to two more calls Saturday afternoon.

A hiker fell in Lions Bay near Mt Brunswick, and they’re assisting a mountain biker up at Mt. Seymour.
