Non-deadly Squid Game comes to Vancouver restaurant

If you loved the Netflix Series “Squid Game,” then you’ll want to ready yourself for the ultimate event at a local Vancouver restaurant this weekend.

Staff at “Sai Woo” are offering Korean dishes, as well as games from the hit show — just without the dying part.

Released on the streaming service mid-September, the show is Netflix’s most-watched series to date. The nine-episode show centres around a contest where players in deep financial debt play children’s games for a chance to win billions of dollars.

Head Chef Seung-min Han says he’s excited to use the event to hopefully shine a light on Korean food and culture.

“Right now, Korean culture like K-Pop, and movies, and dramas, are becoming big things. As a first-generation Korean Canadian, I’m so proud of it. Even the people in Vancouver, they’re really craving for Korean food too.”

Seung-min says event-goers will play their favourite games from the show, and have a three-course Korean meal and cocktails.

“We’re gonna do a honeycomb. And you have to break the honeycombs and make the perfect shape. And also the marble things, which you grab the marbles, and the opponent has to guess which is all the way even. And Ddakji, and lastly, downstairs we’re going to do a red light and green light.”

Winners of each game will receive a prize.

“The hard part for us was baking the honeycomb. I know people are really excited to have the honeycomb, but it’s very hard to make it. We had to work until 5 a.m. today to make all the honeycombs.”

The series had 111 million views within four weeks. The event wraps up on Halloween night.
