Surrey is still in the midst of its police transition, but new officers have already been hard at work, with many assisting in Abbotsford’s flood response
The Surrey Police Service is just weeks into the deployment of its first officers as part of the city’s switch to a municipal force from the RCMP.
Surrey Police Chief Norm Lipinski says his members helped Abbotsford officers with things like directing traffic.
“These are experienced officers that really know how to help the community and know what to do in these times of need,” he told CityNews, adding 150 officers have so far been deployed.

"From traffic control to helping people out."
Chief Norm Lipinski says Abbotsford's Police Chief (@ChiefSerr) made the request. Ten officers responded on Wednesday, according to SPS. #AskTheChief (????@SurreyPS) pic.twitter.com/ArcK4xB3n9

“They weren’t even paired up with Abbotsford police officers. They were given tasks to do and they went out and did them. I’m proud of them.”
Lipinski says the request for assistance came from Abbotsford’s chief of police, Mike Serr.
Officers with the SPS have been hitting the streets in stages, working with the RCMP through the police transition.
The SPS expects new hires to begin deployment over the next several weeks.
