Alex Fraser Bridge reopens after closure due to winter conditions

The Alex Fraser Bridge has reopened after an hours-long closure Friday due to the risk of ice bombs amid winter conditions.

The crossing was closed for safety reasons because high winds were preventing technicians from activating the system that would clear cables of snow and ice buildup.

The province previously said the closure was necessary to protect travellers.”

The closure came in the midst of wintery weather on the Lower Mainland.

This cable system is supposed to deal with snow or ice buildup, which can lead to ice bombs, that can fall on vehicles below. In the past, ice bombs have smashed windshields and caused major damage.
