A COVID-19 testing site on UBC’s Vancouver campus is closing Thursday, according to the health authority.
The site at the UBC Life Sciences Centre opened in late December when demand for tests surged along with the number of positive cases recorded by the province. Many trying to get a PCR test at this time reported hours-long waits, and those deemed lower-risk were sent away with an at-home rapid test.
“This site was established as a temporary testing location on Dec. 24 to support other Vancouver-based sites from late December through to Jan. 2022,” a statement from the health authority says.
“VCH appreciates the support and dedication of frontline workers and UBC leadership who rapidly mobilized and maintained this testing site for the past month.”
Amid the Omicron wave, the province has changed its guidance on testing.
“What we have learned is that most people don’t need testing,” says the BC Centre for Disease Control’s website.
Tests are now recommended only for those who have symptoms and are either at high risk for serious illness, or who live or work in high-risk settings. Those who are immunocompromised or unvaccinated are eligible, as are those who work in health-care facilities or who live in rural or remote communities. Testing is not recommended for people who have “mild symptoms.”
A list of testing sites in the province is available online.
“VCH remains committed to ensuring those at higher risk of serious illness, or those who live or work in high-risk settings continue to receive low-barrier access to testing services,” the statement from the health authority continues.
“Those with symptoms such as chest pain or difficulty breathing should contact their health-care provider or visit their local emergency department for immediate medical attention.”
