Perogies for Peace: Ukrainian church fundraisers for refugees through dinner

To help out Ukrainians caught in the Russian invasion, a New Westminster church hosted a Pierogi dinner and are using the funds collected to help by sending money and supplies overseas.

Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Cathedral has been hosting pierogi dinners for decades, but Pastor Mykhailo Ozorovych says all the money raised will be going to Ukraine for the foreseeable future.

The money goes towards everything, from medical and combat supplies, to outfitting people who volunteer to go to Ukraine to helping fund refugees coming to Canada.

“Somebody is flying to Frankfurt once a week to deliver medical supplies, tourniquets, and sometimes military gear: body armor, vests. Second is that if there are any volunteers who are going to Ukraine or to Europe to volunteer, to offer their services, we try to equip them,” Ozorovych explained.

However, he adds, “The biggest part of this fund is dedicated to the settlers that will be coming from Ukraine and are now in the process of applying for special visas to come to Canada.”

Ozorovych says so far, support has been overwhelming.

“Physical pain experienced by many Ukraine’s can be felt by all the people here. It’s the co-suffering that humans have in them is just … incredible.”
