Snowfall warning issued for Metro Vancouver

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Metro Vancouver Tuesday, with areas like Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Anmore, and Maple Ridge forecast to see up to 5 cm of snow.

CityNews Meteorologist Michael Kuss says blast of winter weather is due to unstable conditions on the south coast. Some other areas are also expected to see some hail, thunderstorms, and rain. East Vancouver Island is also under a snowfall warning from Courtenay to Campbell River.

“It’s April but it feels more like February out there and that’s going to be the case all day long. In fact the Arctic air sticks around all week, but we get more sun, and that allows the temperature to creep up into the double digits after today,” Kuss said.

He says temperatures will be cold Tuesday, and it is bringing some wacky weather conditions with it as it combines with the low pressure system coming from Vancouver Island.

“As a low stays offshore, tracks down into Washington state, gives us that lift but also that lift of the moist air mixing in with the Artic air that’s dropping down from the north,” he said.

While it may be a rare event for April, the snow is expected to be welcome at local ski hills, which remain open to spring skiing, although visibility may be difficult during some of the periods of heavier snowfall.

Although it’s unlikely, snow may reach sea level areas like Vancouver, where many motorists have likely already taken their winter tires off their vehicles. Environment and Climate Change Canada is warning drivers to give themselves extra time, and to drive to conditions.

On Sunday, a storm brought thunder and hail to parts of B.C. and Washington, including Surrey and Vancouver, with many taking to social media to share their videos of the unusual weather event.
